Laura and the Trail of Tears

I liked the book Little House on the Prairie. This book is about when the Ingalls family left their cabin in the big woods and travel by covered wagon to Kansas Territory where they accidentally settle on land belonging to the Osage Indians. In one of the last chapters Laura saw Indians all in one line going west to another place to live. This was called The Trail of Tears. It was a journey that the Native Americans made when they were forced out of their homeland by United States government. The government paid the Indians $1.25 per acre and they left. Laura liked to watch the Indians go by. Her favorite was watching the baby papooses in the baskets. She wanted to keep one. When Laura was writing about the long row of Indians she probably didn’t realize what a sad and important part of history it really was.
