empowering young writers online

Site update

To make it easier to find and comment on contributed stories, I’ve given each contribution its own page. Now you can see the title of each story on the side menu under Share your work. Selecting the title will bring you to a page where you can read the story then post your comments in the “Leave a reply” box at the bottom of the page.

love to hear from you

Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Leave me a message by selecting “Comments” at the bottom of this box.

If you’d like to explain how you feel about something or if you want to convince others to feel the same way, try writing a persuasive essay.  First, make sure readers understand your point by stating your opinion right away. Then use related information or facts to support why you feel this way.

To see a well-organized persuasive essay, check out “My Vote“. Allen C. tells us what he would have done in the very first sentence. He uses the rest of the essay to explain why he would have done it.

Get inspired!

Need some writing inspiration? Head to the library and grab an armload of books. You’ll be more eager to write your own story after you’ve read a great book. Not only that, but you’ll become a better writer just by reading.

(Don’t you wish everything could be that simple? Wouldn’t it be great if you could learn how to dive, or skate, or fly a plane just by watching someone else?)

If you find a book you’d like to recommend to the rest of us, write a review and post it under Share your work. Read Faith’s review of Little House on the Prairie here and Allen’s review of On the Banks of Plum Creek here. Both books were written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Thanks for the reviews, Allen and Faith.

Find out some fascinating facts about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Posted by Faith C.

When a story first enters your head, try to write down everything that occurs to you, even if you have to scribble. Stories and the ideas behind them can be very slippery and come and go very fast. You want to capture everything you can before you forget (especially if you’re in a noisy room). It won’t be perfect, but that’s okay. You can always go back and polish it after you get it down on paper.

That’s what Allen C. and his mom did in the story, “The Same, but Different.” The first version is what writers call the rough draft and it’s how the story first occurred to Allen. The second version shows the changes Allen made to the story after he discussed it with his mom. See if you can spot the changes and figure out why he decided to make them. Do you agree with the changes? Let us know by leaving a reply under Allen’s story.

Thanks to Allen and his mom for sharing both versions. It’s a cool look into the many changes a story usually goes through before readers ever see it.

Puppies and wolves

Want to read about lots of puppies making lots of trouble? Read Arielle’s The Tale of Ten Puppies. It made me laugh. It also made me glad they don’t live in my house!

Also, the Purple Phoenix created a great wolf character. He’s looking for suggestions for the perfect name. Look in the “comments” under the first blue welcome box on this page to see his description of the wolf and to give him your suggestions.

I just found out Nichole T. from Mrs. Smith’s class won an honorable mention in the WQPT/PBS writing contest – awesome job, Nichole!

Faith’s brother, Allen, won second place for 1st grade – WOOT!

Faith and Allen have agreed to share their winning stories here. You can find them here and here.

Excellent job Nichole, Faith and Allen and thanks for sharing!

Faith posted a well-written story about Osama bin Laden. It’s called “A Date to Remember.” You can find it under Share your work or click on the title to jump to it now. Feel free to comment on what Faith has to say and how you feel about yesterday’s events.

Faith C., one of the first contributors to All Write with Me, has won second place for her grade in this year’s WQPT/PBS Kids Go Writers Contest. Her story was judged on clear writing, interesting details, conflict and lessons learned. Way to go, Faith!

Calling all song writers

Do you write music? Would you like to hear how it sounds and share it with others? Try this link recommended by Purple Pheonix: http://www.noteflight.com/

Today is the official “Encourage a Young Writer Day” so I’m sending you some fireworks!

“Come on, let your colors burst” — Katy Perry

There’s been a few comments about Ms. Kantduitt on the site today and let me tell you – she’s nervous. She’d never admit it but I know she is because she stomped off several hours ago and I haven’t seen her since. Still, she doesn’t give up easily and I have a feeling she’ll be back. Quick, go write something and send it to me. Let’s show her she doesn’t know what she’s talking about! (If you don’t know who she is, click here.)

The Purple Pheonix added to the adventure story in Group projects. It’s getting really interesting – check it out!

The Purple Pheonix is working on a fantasy novel and has shared some of it with us in Share your work. It’s loaded with action and adventure. Follow the above link to check it out. Don’t forget to leave The Purple Pheonix a comment while you’re there.

When adding to a group project, you need to fill out the “name” box like this: your first name, last initial, a slash (/), then your teacher’s last name. In group projects, we need to know who’s posting and when to make sure everyone has a chance to add to the story. You don’t have to fill out the “name” box anywhere else on the site, but here it’s important to keep things fair.

You can find the rest of the guidelines to group projects by selecting Group projects in either the top or side menu bars.

(I know, I know. The first entry in the adventure group project doesn’t have a name. It was the first entry and we’re all still learning!)

Yay! Someone has started an adventure story in Group projects and it’s a great beginning! To read it, go here. If you’d like to continue the story, select the small “reply” button directly under the entry. Remember, the big “Leave a reply” box is for starting new stories. Enjoy!

I’m happy to see you here and I hope you have fun! Write on!!

WOOT! Faith has added our second story. It’s about the Titanic and it’s called “Separated.” Check it out!

Arielle M. from Mrs. Smith’s class is the FIRST to post her writing on the site! Way to go, Arielle!! It’s called “My Tour of the Blood Center” and you can read it by clicking on the title now or, if you want to read it later, you can always find it under Share your work. Not only did she do an awesome job, but I bet you’ll learn some things about donating blood.

Let Arielle know how you feel about her story by leaving your comment in the “Leave a Reply” box.

Hi everyone! Hope you have a good time while you’re here. Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Thanks for all your comments! Most of them are here on the home page, under your class hello. Go to the bottom of that post and select Comments to see them. The easiest way to find the other comments is to go to the bottom of the page and view Recent Comments. Select whichever comment you want to see. Thanks again for inviting me into your class. I had fun talking with you about the site and Oggie Cooder.

I hope you have fun here! Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.
